Better question: What isn’t Google doing?

Google operates, at this point in time, as if the Web is the be-all-end-all of communication. If the Web disappeared Google would die. Consider this more carefully. Google’s entire operation is Web based. News, however, is cross-platform: TV, radio, Web, paper. If the Web died, news would survive.

News site homepage only a search bar?

At my lunch with the developer yesterday, he said he wants to make a news site that has two home pages. One is like google’s home page but only for the s ite so people who drilldown can do so with no interruptions. And a My Homepage for people who like to browse. Ingenius.
